Carisoprodol (Soma) for Effective Muscle Relaxation

Known under the branded name of Soma, Carisoprodol acts as a muscle relaxant which is usually prescribed by physicians. It is related structurally, pharmacologically and chemically to meprobamate, which has been a minor tranquilizer, although today it has been replaced by benzodiazepines.

Uses of Carisoprodol

Carisoprodol is usually used for the treatment of injuries which lead to muscle spasms, pain and stiffness. While the task of muscle relaxants is not to heal injuries, they assist in pain reduction and easing of discomfort. Carisoprodol should be taken with ample rest, physical therapy and exercise and other types of treatment that offer short term relief. While prompt relief is available, the drug is no substitute for any other type of treatment. The medication works well in relieving muscle pain caused by injuries, although it does not protect against any other sort of pains.

Side Effects of Carisoprodol

Some of the commonly occurring side effects of the drug Carisoprodol involve dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, agitation, insomnia, tremors and nausea or irritability. Since the muscle relaxants work by affecting our central nervous system, the medicines may be sensitive to the after effects of drugs and alcohol that slow the reaction of our CNS. Some of these drugs may include medicines for handling allergies and colds, muscle relaxants, pain relievers, seizure medication, allergy medicines and antihistamines.

How Does Carisoprodol Work?

As a muscle relaxant, Carisoprodol does not usually relax the tense or stiff muscles of our skeleton. It reacts by blocking the electrical communication that transpires between nerves in the spine as well as the brain's reticular formation. The drug exerts pharmacological effects since it combines carisoprodol and meprobamate. Some of its other properties include that of an analgesic, anticholinergic and antipyretic. However, patients should guard against getting addicted towards this drug. It is made of magnesium stearate, alginic acid, tribasic calcium phosphate, and starch and potassium sorbate.

The prescription drug resembles a crystalline white powder and is soluble freely in alcohol, acetone and chloroform. Before you take the drug, patients should guard against any kind of allergic tendencies, if they have any. You must also inform your physician whether you have ever encountered an unusual response to the medication or any other drug. The product may include inactive ingredients that may lead to allergic reactions or any other kind of problems.

Do not use the drug in case you suffer from any other condition since it might adversely affect your health. Always seek the advice of a doctor or medical expert before taking the drug. Patients of acute intermittent porphyria must make it a point to inform their doctor beforehand. It is best to inform your pharmacist or doctor of any pre existing health condition before taking Carisoprodol. Some of the warning signs that may inhibit you from experiencing the benefits of the drug include liver problems, kidney ailments, seizures and asthma or addiction towards drugs and alcohol. Your health care provider will know which drug to provide you with and in what dose. Hence, make sure to clear everything beforehand.
